Canton, NY-based internet strategies firm, Haenel Communication Technologies, announces today that their client, the Heuvelton Historical Association, has opened their new online store selling Amish-made goods and products, Pickens General Store.
HCT worked closely with Mike Hebert, the store's manager, to direct and develop the new E-commerce website. HCT developed the site, including a full-featured shopping cart software to manage customers and products, as well as integrated merchant service for processing credit cards in real time. Design services were provided through HCT by Mark Crosby of Crosby & Company. Live credit card processing services (merchant account) are provided by Michael Hornung of Brasher Falls through his company, MLS Direct Network.
From the Pickens' "About" page:
"We offer items produced by local Old Order Amish farmers and craftsman or small regional businesses. We strive to provide the highest quality items available. Many items are now being made exclusively for Pickens General Store. We are always searching for quality non-electric items and suppliers.
The Amish way of life has its origin in the Anabaptist movement in Europe. Due to religious persecution, many immigrated to the New World in the 1600 and 1700's, with members settling in the Lancaster County area of southern PA.
Recently, land prices and urban sprawl have forced many Amish people with their simple, family and community-oriented way of life, to seek land in other areas of the country. The Heuvelton area now has one of the largest Old Order Amish communities in New York State. Traditionally, the Old Order Amish, who shun modern conveniences, have been farm based with families raising most of their own food. Milk for the Heritage Cheese House is from the Amish farms where they do not use electricity in their homes or barns. Travel is by horse and buggy or sleigh in the wintertime. Our products are truly just a short buggy ride away.
The Heuvelton Historical Association (dba Pickens General Store) is in the process of renovating Pickens Hall in Heuvelton. This three story stone structure, built in 1858, boasts a music hall on the third floor. Funds from our sales directly support this project. Our brick-and-mortar store carries many more items ... such as non-electric products, supplies, hardware, housewares, gifts, hand crafted Amish made furniture, various candy, Heritage Cheese and much more."
HCT is currently working with the Pickens General Store site to increase search engine visibility and understand traffic to and through the site as orders are placed and fulfillled.
